The University of Manchester's Department of Physics and Astronomy ranks among the UK's most prominent and dynamic physics faculties. With a distinguished history of outstanding academic and investigative work, we engage with nearly all modern research fields.
Our department plays a key role in several Manchester-based interdisciplinary research hubs: The National Graphene Institute, the Photon Science Institute, the Manchester Centre for Non-Linear Dynamics, and the Dalton Nuclear Institute. We also oversee the Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire as part of our operations.
Our Particle Accelerator Group concentrates on equipment related to high-energy particle studies and medical applications. This includes pioneering anti-hydrogen research, developing advanced machine designs for LHC luminosity enhancements, innovative plasma and dielectric acceleration methods, and cutting-edge Terahertz radiation technology.

The standard academic entry requirement for this PhD is an upper second-class (2:1) honours degree in a discipline directly relevant to the PhD (or international equivalent) OR any upper-second class (2:1) honours degree and a Master's degree at merit in a discipline directly relevant to the PhD (or international equivalent)
Applicants who do not already possess an acceptable English Language qualification will need to take a recognised test and attain a minimum IELTS 6.5 overall with a minimum of 6 in writing and listening, and 5.5. in all other sub-tests.
TOEFL iBT - At least90 overall withno subtest below 20.
Pearson Test of English (PTE) - At least70 overall with no subtest below 59
