Our PhD in Linguistics allows you to conduct specialized research aligned with the expertise of our faculty members. The Department of Linguistics and English Language serves as a global hub for linguistic studies, boasting 22 full-time faculty members and around 35 postgraduate researchers. We stand out in the UK and internationally for our exceptional diversity of research areas and theoretical perspectives, with numerous faculty being world-renowned experts in their fields. Our scholars specialize in: phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax (including lexical-functional grammar, role and reference grammar, construction grammar, and minimalism), formal semantics, pragmatics, historical linguistics, dialectology, English linguistics, language contact, variationist sociolinguistics, child language acquisition, field linguistics, language documentation, typology, quantitative corpus-based methods, and forensic linguistics. Our research bridges theoretical innovation with rigorous empirical and methodological foundations. Faculty members also focus on specific languages and language families, ranging from major European languages to lesser-studied languages from Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and Australia.
