The University of Manchester's Department of Physics and Astronomy ranks among the UK's most prominent and dynamic physics faculties. With a distinguished history of academic and research excellence, we engage with nearly all modern research fields.
Our Department plays a key role in several Manchester-based interdisciplinary research hubs: The National Graphene Institute, the Photon Science Institute, the Manchester Centre for Non-Linear Dynamics, and the Dalton Nuclear Institute. We also oversee the Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire as part of our facilities.
Our Biophysics research team employs experimental, theoretical, and computational methods to investigate biological and medical systems across molecular, cellular, tissue, and organ scales. We frequently integrate these approaches to achieve deeper insights into fundamental physics and biomedical principles. All available research projects are interdisciplinary in nature. Consequently, while we welcome postgraduate applicants from physics and chemistry backgrounds, we also regularly attract students from biosciences, computer science, mathematics, and engineering disciplines.
