The University of Manchester's Department of Physics and Astronomy ranks among the UK's most prominent and dynamic physics departments. With a distinguished history of academic and research excellence, we engage in cutting-edge studies across numerous modern physics disciplines. Our department plays a pivotal role in several Manchester-based interdisciplinary research hubs, including the Photon Science Institute, Manchester Centre for Non-Linear Dynamics, Dalton Nuclear Institute, and Mesoscience and Nanotechnology Centre. We also oversee the renowned Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire. Our Particle Accelerator Group specializes in two key areas: high-energy particle physics and medical applications. The particle physics research involves pioneering work on anti-hydrogen, LHC machine enhancements for increased luminosity and energy, innovative plasma/dielectric acceleration techniques, and Terahertz radiation generation. Our medical physics initiatives focus on revolutionary accelerator designs and exploring the biological effects of high-energy particle beams for advanced cancer radiotherapy treatments.
