The MA in Visual Anthropology program is designed to accommodate varying levels of expertise in anthropology and filmmaking, whether you're new to formal anthropology, film production, visual techniques, and photography, or already experienced in one or more of these fields. For almost three decades, the University's Granada Centre for Visual Anthropology has been globally acknowledged as the premier hub for visual anthropology. Our alumni have created over 400 ethnographic films viewed worldwide, and the center now leads the evolving conversation between art and anthropology, encompassing sensory ethnography, sound studies, experimental approaches, photographic and digital media, as well as museum and gallery exhibitions. Our MA and MPhil programs integrate anthropological study with instruction in film production, editing, visual methodologies, photography, sensory ethnography, and sound. Students receive access to professional-grade equipment and guidance from our distinguished faculty, the most extensive visual anthropology team in Europe. The Granada Centre maintains its reputation for excellence in both social sciences and arts, a distinction formally acknowledged by the ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) and AHRC, which granted our master's program the unique status of a professional preparation degree—an honor unmatched by any other visual anthropology course in the UK.
