The fields of sociology and linguistics are fundamentally interconnected. Understanding society requires examining language, just as analyzing language necessitates considering its social framework. This program will push you to explore the structure of our social environments and how linguistic and cultural elements construct and influence these realms. You'll examine both societal patterns and transformations, ranging from how inequalities persist across social divisions (including race, class, and gender) to how broader cultural settings affect personal relationships. Alongside developing high-level language proficiency, you'll gain insights into the associated cultures and histories. During the third year of this four-year course, you'll complete a residency abroad, either studying or working in a nation where your target language is spoken.
