The fields of sociology and linguistics are fundamentally interconnected. Understanding society requires examining language, just as analyzing language demands consideration of its social setting. This program will push you to examine the structure of our social environments and explore how linguistic and cultural elements construct and influence these worlds. You'll investigate both societal structures and transformations, ranging from how inequalities persist across different social groups (including race, class, and gender) to how broader cultural frameworks influence personal relationships. Alongside developing high-level language proficiency, you'll gain insights into the cultures and histories associated with your chosen language. During the third year of this four-year course, you'll complete a residency abroad, either studying or working in a nation where your target language is spoken.
