Our BA Linguistics and Portuguese program allows you to explore the scientific study of language - a fundamental human ability that shapes both personal interactions and global communication. You'll investigate fascinating subjects like first language acquisition in children, gender differences in speech patterns, the structural organization of various language systems, linguistic interactions between different language communities, and more. The course also provides intensive Portuguese language training, helping you reach near-native fluency in both European and Brazilian variants while examining their cultural and historical backgrounds. Beginners can progress to advanced proficiency across the four-year program. Beyond language mastery, you'll gain insights into Portuguese-speaking cultures through studies of their societies, histories, political systems, and literary traditions, enhancing your intercultural competence - skills increasingly sought after in today's job market. You'll enjoy top-quality instruction, comprehensive student support, and modern learning resources, all within Manchester's dynamic, multicultural environment - recognized as Western Europe's most linguistically diverse urban center. The mandatory third-year abroad includes study abroad opportunities and professional placements in Portuguese-speaking regions across Europe and Latin America, offering our students transformative personal growth and career-enhancing international experience.
