Our BA Linguistics program allows you to explore the scientific study of language - a fundamental aspect of human existence that influences both personal and worldwide interactions. In this course, you'll examine the phonetics and grammatical systems of diverse world languages, investigating subjects like: language origins, evolution and extinction, first language acquisition in children, second language learning in adults, gender-based speech variations, interpersonal and group communication dynamics, and linguistic interactions between different language communities. Manchester's vibrant multicultural environment provides the perfect setting for studying language variation and multilingualism. Our approach combines empirical investigation with theoretical analysis, often blending both methodologies. Students benefit from access to one of the UK's most extensive linguistics libraries and can work with rare English manuscripts from our renowned Special Collections. The department features two specialized labs equipped with advanced tools including ultrasound imaging, laryngography equipment, and eye-tracking technology.
