The Joint Honours in Film Studies offers comprehensive training in cinematic history and core theoretical frameworks, while allowing you to pursue specialized interests alongside your French language and cultural studies. In Film Studies, you'll broaden your cinematic horizons through structured courses and screenings featuring both classic and modern films from diverse global traditions. The program examines both mainstream and alternative cinema to deepen your appreciation of film history while exploring contemporary discussions and emerging trends shaping the medium's evolution. Through detailed analysis, you'll investigate cinema's relationship with social, cultural, and political themes, situating films within their historical contexts while considering present-day discourse and future cinematic developments. This program focuses primarily on historical and theoretical film studies rather than practical filmmaking. Regarding French studies, over two-thirds of our faculty are native speakers who conduct instruction in both language courses and most cultural studies. You'll receive 3-6 weekly hours of French grammar and conversation training (available at post-A-Level or beginner levels) to achieve near-native proficiency. These language studies complement optional modules covering French and Francophone history, politics, literature, popular culture, and linguistics spanning from the Early Modern era to contemporary times. Our longstanding partnership with Manchester's Alliance Française provides access to cultural programming including film screenings, lectures, theatrical performances, concerts, exhibitions, and intensive language workshops. Additionally, our collaboration with the Institut de Touraine in France's Loire Valley offers Easter and summer language programs suitable for both beginners and advanced students. Our curriculum's breadth and excellence consistently receive praise from external reviewers, with two faculty members honored with University Teaching Excellence Awards.
