Parasitic diseases remain a significant health challenge, particularly in developing nations. Our medical parasitology research encompasses both fundamental and applied studies, investigating parasite evolution, resistance mechanisms, and immune responses to facilitate vaccine development. With a 150-year legacy, Liverpool maintains global leadership in infection research, tropical medicine, and public health.

Employing cutting-edge genomic and proteomic methods, we examine parasites responsible for widespread intestinal infections like cryptosporidiosis, giardiasis, and amoebiasis across global populations. Advanced 3D tissue models help us explore host-pathogen dynamics at the intestinal level, focusing particularly on apicomplexan parasites.

Our work uncovers genomic foundations of complex disease processes, including antigenic variation in trypanosomatid parasites that trigger neglected tropical diseases such as sleeping sickness and leishmaniasis.

At our IC2 laboratories on the city campus, we study human parasitic infections to decipher their molecular and physiological mechanisms, paving the way for innovative treatments that enhance worldwide health outcomes.

Through advanced imaging technologies, we're examining how parasites like Toxoplasma gondii circumvent and exploit host immune defenses. Our genomic research prioritizes antigen discovery, such as identifying new surface proteins in malaria parasites, which deepens our understanding of host-pathogen relationships and aids vaccine development.

Regarding helminth infections, we focus on filarial parasites causing river blindness and lymphatic filariasis, with extensive programs exploring vaccine development and the role of Wolbachia bacterial symbionts as potential antibiotic targets.

Additionally, we analyze the biology and behavior of disease vectors like chigger mites, which spread scrub typhus.

The University of Liverpool's Institute of Infection and Global Health unites top researchers from medical, veterinary, and basic science disciplines. It synergizes with other Liverpool institutions including the School of Tropical Medicine, Wolfson Centre for Personalised Medicine, and Wellcome Trust Tropical Centre, while maintaining strong NHS partnerships through the Liverpool Health Partners network.
