Our Latin American Studies research encompasses diverse regions and leads innovation in literary, historical, cultural, and social science fields. We publish influential journals like the Bulletin of Hispanic Studies, Bulletin of Contemporary Hispanic Studies, and Modern Languages Open. Our approach embraces Latin American studies in its fullest context, examining the interconnected Hispanic and Lusophone worlds across multiple geographic and linguistic dimensions.
Collaboration with cultural institutions like FACT, National Museums Liverpool, Tate Gallery, and the Bluecoat enables us to host public programs exploring Latin American digital art, Brazilian popular culture, and cinematic/literary works.
Postgraduate researchers enjoy customized supervision across disciplines and institutions. As part of the ESRC North West Doctoral Training Centre's Language-Based Area Studies pathway (with Manchester and Lancaster Universities), our students access resources from three leading institutions. ESRC funding supports social science-focused MA/PhD (13 awards) and PhD-only (3 awards) research. Humanities-focused applicants may apply through the AHRC North West Consortium's modern languages pathway.
The North West Americas Studies Network (NWASN), our regional research hub, strengthens scholarly exchange through Liverpool's multidisciplinary expertise. This network connects specialists in American studies to facilitate collaboration and idea-sharing.
In April 2016, Liverpool welcomed the Society for Latin American Studies annual conference and continues to host the prestigious 'Bulletin of Latin American Research' and 'Bulletin of Hispanic Studies'.
