This MRes program, along with the Latin American Studies MRes and Film Studies MRes, offers a customized introduction to postgraduate research. It helps you grow as an independent scholar while creating an original research project with support from specialists in modern languages and cultures.
Specialization options include Basque studies, Catalan studies, Chinese studies, French studies, German studies, Hispanic studies, Italian studies, Portuguese studies, sociolinguistics, Spanish studies, and translation studies. Your degree title will correspond to your chosen specialization.

Regardless of your specialization, this program delivers comprehensive preparation for PhD research and professional advancement. We'll support you through the entire research process while developing valuable transferable skills such as analytical reasoning, project coordination, effective communication, and creative problem-solving.
The research methodology training is specifically adapted for modern languages and cultural studies, with additional customization based on your research proposal. You'll receive thorough grounding in current scholarship within your chosen field, co-create a personalized reading list, and complete tailored assessment tasks before undertaking your major research project.
Under the mentorship of active researchers from the Department of Languages, Culture and Film, you'll learn how to formulate research proposals, locate relevant sources and evidence, conduct organized research, and effectively analyze and present your findings.
