Develop your research capabilities through specialized training in modern languages and cultural studies, combined with customized theoretical and methodological frameworks designed for your specific research goals. With guidance from experienced supervisors, you'll create a substantial independent research project that contributes new insights to your field and serves as excellent preparation for doctoral studies. This MRes program – along with the Latin American Studies MRes and Film Studies MRes – delivers a customized, intensive introduction to advanced research. It prepares you to become an autonomous researcher capable of executing original academic work under the mentorship of modern languages and cultural studies specialists.

Specialization options include Basque studies, Catalan studies, Chinese studies, French studies, German studies, Hispanic studies, Italian studies, Portuguese studies, sociolinguistics, Spanish studies, and translation studies. Your degree title will correspond to your chosen specialization.

Regardless of your specialization, this program delivers comprehensive preparation for PhD research and professional advancement. The research methodology training is specifically adapted for modern languages and cultural studies, with additional customization based on your research proposal. You'll receive thorough exposure to contemporary scholarship in your chosen discipline and collaboratively develop a personalized reading list and assessment plan to prepare for your major research undertaking.

Under the supervision of active researchers from the Department of Languages, Culture and Film, you'll learn essential research techniques including proposal development, source identification, research planning and execution, as well as data analysis and presentation methods.
