Epidemiology examines health and illness patterns within specific human and animal populations. The University of Liverpool's Institute of Infection and Global Health was created to unite top researchers from medical, veterinary, and fundamental science disciplines within the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences.
This field plays a crucial role in uncovering disease origins and transmission patterns, while also aiding in creating effective prevention strategies. At IGH, we investigate both infectious and non-infectious diseases affecting humans and animals, including zoonotic illnesses.
Human epidemiological studies at our institute encompass clinical and molecular research on various infections - including gastrointestinal, respiratory, vector-borne, and sexually-transmitted diseases - affecting adults and children across the UK, Europe, Africa, and Asia.
Animal epidemiology research primarily occurs at our Leahurst campus, where diverse experts collaborate. Our team includes veterinary and medical clinicians, statisticians, mathematicians, and basic science researchers working collectively on multiple challenges. These include studying zoonotic pathogens, tracking antimicrobial resistance spread, analyzing human behavior's role in disease transmission, enhancing health in livestock and pets, and assessing environmental and climatic impacts on disease spread.
