The University of Liverpool's Psychiatry Division offers guidance for postgraduate students pursuing research degrees in specialized areas. For details about these research focus areas, please review the Division's research themes listed below. Financial assistance for research degrees is generally unavailable unless special agreements are established with primary supervisors or students secure positions through competitive application processes. Our division boasts vibrant, globally recognized research teams, with 80% of our research output in the latest Research Assessment Exercise (2008) meeting international standards.
Psychiatry encompasses several exceptional research themes. In General and Adult Psychiatry, led by Professor Christoph Lauber since late 2007, the primary focus is 'social inclusion and exclusion of individuals with severe mental illness.' The research mission is framed as: Addressing severe mental illness - translating clinical inquiries into research findings and applying them back to practice. Key areas of investigation include: vocational support for individuals with psychosis and common mental disorders, participation of patients and caregivers in mental healthcare, societal stigma surrounding mental illness, mental health service evaluation, and intervention studies.
