Immunology examines how organisms defend against infections. Without immune defenses, humans and animals would be vulnerable to severe infections caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites. Vaccinology focuses on creating vaccines to stimulate protective immune responses. The University of Liverpool's Institute of Infection, Veterinary, and Ecological Sciences (IVES) unites top researchers from medical, veterinary, and basic science fields within the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. We stand among the rare UK academic institutions that have developed, produced, and evaluated a human vaccine through clinical trials. Our extensive collection of human samples supports immunological studies, enhancing our knowledge of vaccine mechanisms and guiding improvements for future vaccine development.Immunology and Vaccinology research is conducted in modern facilities across four locations: the Biosciences Building, IC2, Leahurst campus, and Ronald Ross Building. The University of Liverpool's Centre for Global Vaccine Research collaborates with partners in Europe, Asia, Africa, and recently South America. Our research covers all aspects of vaccine development, from creation to real-world application and assessment. The studies focus on analyzing cellular and antibody-mediated immune responses to pathogens affecting humans and animals. This includes investigating immunity and vaccination strategies against various bacterial, viral, and parasitic threats such as: SARS-CoV-2, influenza, Salmonella, Streptococcus pneumoniae, chicken metapneumovirus, Cryptosporidium, cytomegalovirus and other herpesviruses, cyathostomins, Fasciola, Giardia, HIV, Japanese encephalitis virus, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Neospora caninum, Onchocerca, Toxoplasma, Leptospira, Treponema, and Zika virus.
Students will normally have a minimum of a 2:1 class honours degree in a relevant biological science subject, or an equivalent medical, veterinary or dental qualification. Applicants are selected on the basis of their curriculum vitae, qualifications and referees’ reports, together with their perceived ability to complete the programme successfully and on the value of the training offered to their subsequent career plans.
