Epidemiology examines health and illness patterns within specific human and animal populations. This field plays a crucial role in uncovering disease origins, tracking their spread, and creating efficient prevention strategies. The University of Liverpool's Institute of Infection and Global Health unites top medical, veterinary, and scientific experts from the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences.
At IGH, we investigate both infectious and non-infectious diseases affecting humans and animals, including diseases that transfer between species.
Our human epidemiology research encompasses clinical and molecular studies of various infections - including gastrointestinal, respiratory, vector-borne, and sexually-transmitted diseases - affecting adults and children across the UK, Europe, Africa, and Asia.
Animal epidemiology research primarily occurs at the Leahurst campus, where diverse specialists collaborate. Our team includes veterinary and medical researchers, statisticians, mathematicians, and scientists working collectively on multiple challenges. These include studying zoonotic pathogens, tracking antibiotic resistance spread, analyzing human behavior's role in disease transmission, enhancing disease prevention methods, improving livestock and pet health, and assessing environmental and climatic impacts on disease spread.
