The ocean is pivotal in governing Earth's climate, acting as a global regulator for heat and carbon distribution. To truly comprehend its impact on climate and ecosystems, we must examine the core biological, physical, and chemical mechanisms at work. This degree pathway employs an interdisciplinary method to explore oceanic and climatic systems.
Our program maintains close collaborations with researchers from Liverpool's National Oceanography Centre, who contribute through guest lectures and project guidance.
The four-year master's course (F710) builds upon the same multidisciplinary foundation as the three-year program (F700). The final year enhances your expertise with advanced skills for research or industry roles, tackling critical ocean science challenges. Emphasis is placed on numerical proficiency, practical lab and field experience, and self-directed learning.
Initial years mirror the BSc (Hons) Ocean Sciences curriculum, establishing a robust interdisciplinary knowledge base. The fourth year's first semester expands your understanding of marine research, hones data analysis capabilities, and engages you in research proposal development and contemporary scientific debates.
This preparatory training equips you for a substantial independent research project in the second semester, mentored by University and National Oceanography Centre experts. The advanced curriculum cultivates essential research competencies - critical analysis, effective communication, and scientific writing - while highlighting emerging challenges in marine science. Liverpool's Ocean Sciences program holds accreditation from the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology.
Several programs within the School incorporate practical laboratory and field components, with fieldwork conducted in diverse settings from urban to coastal and alpine regions. We welcome applications from students with disabilities, evaluating them equally and implementing reasonable accommodations to ensure accessibility.
