Introduction This MA program delves into the history of forced labor while investigating contemporary slavery, responding to increasing scholarly interest in the legacy of transatlantic slavery. The curriculum bridges regional and worldwide perspectives, considering Liverpool's historical significance as a former hub of the slave trade alongside examining coerced labor across various eras and regions. Students will critically assess historical slavery systems and evaluate modern approaches to combating human trafficking. By exploring slavery's enduring impacts on today's society, you'll employ critical theories to analyze diverse representations of servitude, including connections to resistance movements and activism. A distinctive partnership with Liverpool's International Slavery Museum offers valuable learning opportunities. Collaborating with museum professionals, you'll investigate how slavery is commemorated and memorialized. An optional placement allows for hands-on experience with cultural institutions or humanitarian organizations. Through membership in the University's Centre for the Study of International Slavery, you'll participate in seminars and conferences featuring global experts, engaging with pioneering research on both historical and modern forms of slavery.
