German serves as a crucial language in global business, trade, and scientific fields, while also offering insights into a dynamic multicultural society with a profound historical legacy and significant cultural contributions. Our program ensures you'll develop advanced skills in writing, reading, speaking, and comprehending modern German, while also gaining deep knowledge of German-speaking nations' societies, histories, political systems, linguistic structures, cultural expressions, literary works, and cinematic achievements. Graduates with German qualifications rank among the most desirable candidates for employers, and our students receive exceptional preparation to excel in their professional careers.
While refining language proficiency remains central to our modern languages curriculum in Liverpool, every degree program requires comprehensive intellectual exploration across diverse aspects of German studies. We investigate and instruct on German historical developments, cultural phenomena, literary works, and films spanning the 19th through 21st centuries, along with linguistic studies, translation practices, and numerous other disciplines.
Our students engage in various enrichment activities beyond the classroom, such as the ongoing writer-in-residence initiative, the yearly department-wide translation workshop, and the Sauerkraut Cup intercollegiate soccer competition sponsored by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). They frequently earn distinguished DAAD Summer School scholarships.
