Our English Language program is designed to enhance your comprehension of how language functions globally. You'll examine the evolution and applications of English across diverse social, legal, educational, and other settings, while discovering how everyday communication is influenced by historical, cultural, and psychological factors. The first year establishes foundational skills and knowledge for advanced studies, covering English language history, development, and contextual usage, with practical applications in literary texts and media analysis.
During your second and final years, you can select specialized modules in areas like psycholinguistics, gender and language, English history, child language development, forensic linguistics, or TESOL. The concluding year offers either a self-directed research dissertation or a professional placement through the SOTA300 module.
This program includes an optional industrial placement year. Choosing this option means spending your third year in a paid position within a relevant organization, with ongoing support from the School of the Arts. Your reflective report on this experience will count toward your final degree classification. To select the industrial placement option, enter code YI in the UCAS application's further choices section.
