For those captivated by the ancient cultures of Egypt, the Mediterranean, and the Near East, this program offers an unparalleled opportunity to explore these civilizations with exceptional breadth and depth. You'll delve into the archaeology, culture, society, and history of pivotal civilizations including Ancient Greece, Egypt, Rome, and the Near East, while gaining hands-on training in modern archaeological techniques.
Diverse archaeological evidence and literary sources unveil a world populated by poets, historians, artists, rulers, priests, bureaucrats, enslaved people, soldiers, elites, and everyday individuals. Examining their aspirations, beliefs, and daily lives deepens our comprehension of human nature and societal development. The first year provides foundational knowledge in archaeological methods alongside the history and archaeology of Egypt, Greece, Rome, and the ancient Near East. During the second and third years, you'll focus on core aspects of ancient societies—political structures, art, religion, and texts—while specializing in at least two civilizations (Near East, Egypt, or Greece and Rome). The program mandates four weeks of archaeological fieldwork across the first two years, with first-year students participating in the department's field school. Second-year students often join international excavations, currently operating in locations such as Greece, Turkey, Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Zambia, and the UK.
