Lincoln's medieval character creates an ideal setting for conducting research. You'll be able to utilize extensive local resources, including our well-established Medieval Studies Research Group. Doctoral candidates can draw upon diverse academic specializations spanning Roman and medieval history across the British Isles, Western Europe, and the Mediterranean (particularly the Iberian region), as well as gender studies, literary analysis, and investigations into social, political, economic, legal, religious, and cultural history, archaeology, medievalism, and emotional history. The program offers comprehensive support and training designed to cultivate the analytical and practical skills required for doctoral research. Through the Medieval Studies Research Group's organized events and activities, postgraduate students engage in a vibrant intellectual community where they can exchange ideas and debate theoretical frameworks with peers, faculty, and visiting scholars. Our College of Arts maintains strong interdisciplinary connections, particularly with the Schools of Film and Media, English, and Journalism, fostering collaborative opportunities across various research themes. Prospective students with questions are encouraged to reach out to either the Program Leader or members of the Medieval Studies Research Group. As postgraduate research demands considerable independent work, full-time scholars typically meet with their advisors monthly, while part-time researchers have bi-monthly supervision sessions.
