During MPhil or PhD studies, candidates can pursue self-directed research in their preferred field under the guidance of academic mentors. Various training programs help cultivate essential research competencies. The School of Fine and Performing Arts possesses deep research knowledge across drama, theatre, and performance disciplines, with faculty providing ongoing mentorship. Specialized areas encompass scriptwriting, theatrical composition, stage design, musical productions, Asian performance traditions, multimedia integration, historical analysis, alongside practice-led and practice-oriented investigations. Doctoral candidates may join one of the School's active research collectives - Contemporary Theatre-Making, (Re)Constructing Musics, or Intercultural Performance - and engage with the Critical Encounters Research Series alongside faculty and fellow postgraduates. Scholars receive encouragement to showcase their work at domestic and global conferences and to disseminate their discoveries through publications. The School of Fine and Performing Arts maintains substantial research proficiency in dramatic arts, theatrical studies, and performance scholarship, with sustained academic guidance available throughout the research journey. Focus areas include dramatic writing, theatrical theory, production design, musical theater, Asian performance forms, cross-media approaches, historical methodologies, as well as practice-driven and practice-centered research approaches.
