The MChem Chemistry for Drug Discovery and Development program equips students with expertise in designing and creating bioactive compounds, progressing through to final pharmaceutical products for patient use. Participants acquire synthetic chemistry knowledge while gaining hands-on experience with drug formulation and production, aligned with pharmaceutical industry regulations. This includes extensive practical training in advanced laboratory methods.

This course enables students to build thorough chemical knowledge while cultivating specialized and transferable skills, fostering deep insight into chemistry's role in addressing societal challenges. Our curriculum prepares graduates for successful careers by providing comprehensive academic chemistry training coupled with practical experience in socially and industrially relevant applications.

The program adopts a unified approach to organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry, examining their interconnected nature.

Students begin by concentrating on organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry through an integrated curriculum highlighting their relationships. Practical lab sessions and extensive use of specialized equipment help develop technical proficiency. Advanced stages allow students to implement their knowledge in real-world scenarios, including interdisciplinary projects informed by industry needs. A major research component offers specialization opportunities, while the entire program emphasizes professional skill development for future careers.

Instruction combines lectures, seminars, hands-on lab work, and guest presentations from industry experts. Small-group teaching and collaborative learning methods foster a supportive environment that emphasizes practical, problem-solving approaches.

Fourth-year MChem students can pursue year-long industrial placements, either with university partners abroad, industry collaborators, or within our research teams. These placements combine professional experience with advanced academic study focused on cutting-edge chemistry research.

The university provides placement search support and ongoing assistance during internships. Paid positions are competitive, requiring formal applications. While tuition fees apply during placements, students must cover their own living expenses, travel, and accommodation costs.
