Lincoln boasts a rich and captivating past. Featuring an ancient castle, a globally celebrated Gothic cathedral, and some of the best-preserved medieval buildings in the UK, the city offers exceptional resources for in-depth study of medieval history.
Students will master various research techniques in Medieval Studies while acquiring specialized skills like palaeography and Latin. The program teaches how to investigate historical archives to uncover insights into England's and Europe's social, political, cultural, economic, and religious development, as well as that of the Mediterranean region. Our curriculum incorporates diverse academic viewpoints, including Women's History, the History of Emotions, and Medievalism. Certain courses benefit from Lincoln Cathedral's remarkable manuscript collection, which includes one of only 50 complete Canterbury Tales manuscripts and The Thornton Romances featuring the earliest recorded version of King Arthur's demise.
Students will collaborate with distinguished faculty members who are active researchers, published authors, editors, conference speakers, media contributors, conservation specialists, and heritage authorities.
As part of Lincoln's School of Humanities and Heritage, medieval studies scholars can engage with our dynamic postgraduate community through various research initiatives organized by the Medieval Studies Research Group. These encompass academic seminars, an Annual Medieval Lecture, an international 'Medieval Week,' and reading circles that bring together PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers.
