Lincoln's Classical Studies program provides a chance to investigate and analyze the civilizations, languages, and histories of ancient Greece and Rome, revealing their lasting impact on modern society. The BA (Hons) Classical Studies is a multidisciplinary program where students can learn about antiquity alongside specialists in archaeology, history, philosophy, art history, literary studies, heritage preservation, and performing arts. The course content showcases the diverse scholarship within the School of History and Heritage and across the College of Arts. Lincoln's urban landscape bears witness to its Roman origins as Lindum Colonia, originally a first-century military base that later transformed into a veteran colony. Roman influences persist throughout the city, from surviving wall sections and water channels to the enduring street layout. The historic Newport Arch, a third-century gateway, still accommodates modern traffic, while the university campus overlooks Brayford Pool - an ancient harbor with visible Roman-era waterfront remnants linking to the Trent River. Our Classical Studies faculty specialize in dynamic research fields ranging from Roman London's development to the Western Empire's collapse, from Hellenistic historical narratives to Mediterranean linguistic traditions. All courses incorporate current research, with staff helping students utilize specialized resources including Lincoln's architectural heritage and artifacts at The Collection museum, where we enjoy exclusive access.
