Modern media surrounds us constantly, from our smartphones to our nightstands and educational spaces, as media platforms and usage evolve far beyond traditional TV sets and desktop computers. Doctoral candidates undertake an original research project with support from their advisory committee. The maximum enrollment duration allowed prior to submitting a thesis is 4 years for full-time students or 7 years for part-time/distance learners. The active research phase (encompassing experiments, lab work, field studies, and data gathering) typically spans 3 to 3.5 years full-time or 6 to 6.5 years part-time. After completing research, students may apply for a writing-up period lasting up to one year. The combined research and writing phases cannot surpass the total registration limit. Theses generally shouldn't exceed 80,000 words and must demonstrate novel scholarly contributions with publishable-quality work. Final degree conferral requires successfully defending the thesis in an oral examination.
