PhD candidates undertake an independent research initiative with support from a supervisory team. The maximum enrollment duration before thesis submission is 4 years for full-time students or 7 years for part-time/distance learners. Typically, active research (including experiments, lab work, fieldwork, and data gathering) spans 3 to 3.5 years full-time or 6 to 6.5 years part-time/distance learning. After completing active research, students may apply for a writing-up period of up to 12 months. The combined active research and writing-up phases must not surpass the maximum registration timeframe. Theses should generally not exceed 80,000 words and must offer original insights with publishable-quality content. Finally, candidates must successfully defend their thesis in a viva voce (oral) examination to earn their degree.
