At Leicester, we inspire students to discover the joys of literary study within a vibrant community of dedicated faculty and eager learners. Our campus boasts numerous English societies and committees offering a diverse range of extracurricular and social activities. Each year, we organize numerous conferences, lectures, and seminars, most of which welcome public attendance. Doctoral candidates pursue independent research projects with support from their supervisory teams. The maximum enrollment period before thesis submission is 4 years for full-time students or 7 years for part-time students. The active research phase (including experiments, lab work, fieldwork, and data collection) typically spans 3 to 3.5 years full-time or 6 to 6.5 years part-time. Following active research, students may apply for a writing-up period of up to one year. The combined duration of active research and writing-up must not exceed the maximum registration period. Theses should generally not surpass 80,000 words and must demonstrate original scholarly contributions with publishable-quality work. Final degree conferral requires successful defense of the thesis in a viva voce (oral) examination.
