At Leicester, we inspire students to discover the joys of literary study within a vibrant community of dedicated faculty and eager learners. Our campus boasts numerous English-focused societies and committees offering a diverse schedule of extracurricular and social activities. Each year, we organize numerous conferences, lectures, and seminars, most of which welcome public attendance. Doctoral candidates undertake an independent research endeavor with support from a supervisory team. The maximum enrollment duration before thesis submission is 4 years for full-time students or 7 years for part-time students. The active research phase (encompassing experiments, lab work, fieldwork, and data gathering) typically spans 3 to 3.5 years full-time or 6 to 6.5 years part-time. Following active research, students may apply for a writing-up period lasting up to 12 months. The combined active research and writing-up phases must not surpass the maximum enrollment period. Theses generally should not exceed 80,000 words and must present original scholarly contributions with publishable-quality work. Final degree conferral requires successful defense of the thesis in a viva voce (oral) examination.
