At Leicester, we invite you to discover the joys of literary study within a vibrant community of dedicated academics and eager students. Our university boasts numerous English societies and groups offering a diverse range of extracurricular and social activities. Each year, we organize numerous conferences, talks, and seminars, most of which are accessible to the wider public. Doctoral candidates undertake an independent research project with support from a supervisory team. The maximum enrollment period before thesis submission is 4 years for full-time students or 7 years for part-time students. The active research phase (encompassing experiments, lab work, fieldwork, and data gathering) typically spans 3 to 3.5 years full-time or 6 to 6.5 years part-time. Following active research, students may apply for a writing-up period of up to one year. The combined duration of active research and writing-up must not surpass the maximum enrollment period. Theses should generally not exceed 80,000 words and must present original scholarly contributions with publishable-quality work. Finally, candidates must successfully defend their thesis in an oral examination (viva voce) to receive their degree.
