Doctoral candidates pursue independent research projects with faculty supervision, typically finishing within 3-3.5 years for full-time students or 6-6.5 years for part-time students. An additional year (or remaining portion) may be used for thesis preparation. The dissertation, limited to 50,000 words, must demonstrate original scholarly contributions and research worthy of publication. Final degree conferral requires successful defense of the thesis during an oral examination.
