English and History are deeply interconnected disciplines. Significant historical developments shape writers, literary works, cultural movements, and even language evolution - from the Norman Conquest to the Reformation, and from the Civil War through the Cold War and modern times. The English and History BA program combines these naturally aligned subjects through carefully paired modules that mutually enhance learning. You'll examine English Literature and History across all eras while engaging with diverse analytical approaches. Flexible elective options let you focus on your most compelling interests. Leicester graduates emerge with exceptional knowledge breadth and transferable skills. This program reveals how authors respond to their historical contexts, how they portray their world, and how to interpret texts through historical lenses. You'll access rare library archives containing 12th-century materials, with special manuscript collections providing tangible links to the past. Your first two years balance English and History studies equally, while the third year allows specialization in your preferred field. The curriculum spans medieval to contemporary studies across both disciplines.
