Pursuing a PhD in the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies allows you to specialize in a particular field while honing advanced research capabilities, equipping you for both academic pursuits and specialized career opportunities. As a doctoral candidate, you'll undertake original research with supervision, participating in regular progress reviews and creating a tailored training plan to ensure you develop the necessary expertise for your project.

Thai Studies has formed a core component of East Asian Studies since 2004. Dr. Martin Seeger, a former Buddhist monk ordained in the 1990s who now heads research in this discipline, was honored with the Royal Decoration of the Fifth Class of the Most Admirable Order of the Direkgunabhorn in 2013. This recognition celebrates his contributions to fostering cultural understanding between Thailand and the UK. Research focuses include Thai Buddhist history, modern Buddhist movements and their societal impacts, as well as theological debates within Thai Buddhism.

The required IELTS score is an overall band score of 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any component; the required TOEFL iBT score is no less than 88, with at least 19 in Listening, 20 in Reading, 22 in Speaking and 21 in Writing.
