Our Doctor of Philosophy program serves as the primary research-focused degree. To earn a PhD, candidates must submit a substantial thesis (either 300 pages or 100,000 words) that demonstrates original discoveries, interpretations, and communication of new knowledge through research. This work should meet publication standards in respected international and national peer-reviewed journals, representing what an dedicated student could achieve within three to four years of full-time study (or five to seven years for part-time or split-site study).
The Rock Mechanics, Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology group (RMEGH) specializes in studying the geomechanical, geotechnical, and geoenvironmental properties of rock, soil, and groundwater systems. Our research particularly examines how these natural materials interact with human-made structures and projects. We strive to push the frontiers of knowledge in specialized fields including rock mechanics, engineering geology, hydrogeology, and geotechnics. The group possesses particular strengths in tunneling engineering, landslide mechanics, slope stability analysis, rock weathering processes, fractured rock hydrogeology, hydrogeophysical methods, and contaminant biodegradation research.
