Pursuing an MA or MSc by Research offers a valuable chance to enhance your analytical abilities and deepen your scholarly focus in a specific discipline. This Research Masters program spans 12 months (or 24 months part-time), focusing entirely on designing, executing, and documenting an independent research initiative. You'll receive guidance from two faculty supervisors and have the opportunity to publish your findings upon completion.
Our research team investigates ecological systems across multiple scales - from genetic and organismal levels to population dynamics, community structures, and entire food webs, including functional processes like decomposition and ecosystem metabolism. While specializing in freshwater invertebrate ecology, we also possess significant expertise in algal communities, microorganisms (fungi, bacteria), and fish populations. Freshwater ecosystems harbor exceptional biodiversity relative to their limited global surface coverage. Our focus on these organisms stems from their heightened vulnerability to environmental pressures including land use modifications (agriculture, forestry, urban development), extreme weather phenomena, and climate shifts. These species also serve as effective bioindicators for monitoring pollution impacts and evaluating ecosystem recovery following restoration efforts.
