The Master of Philosophy degree is granted upon completion of a thesis (200 pages or 60,000 words) that demonstrates your ability to conduct research and produce scholarly work meeting publication standards through peer review. Examiners must approve that this work could reasonably be accomplished within two to three years of full-time study (or four to six years part-time). Additionally, you must show comprehensive knowledge in your research field. This program is ideal for candidates with two years of research funding.
Our research team investigates ecological systems across multiple scales - from genetic and organism levels to populations, communities, and entire food webs, including functional processes like decomposition and ecosystem metabolism. While specializing in freshwater invertebrate ecology, we also work with algal communities, microorganisms (fungi, bacteria), and fish. Freshwater ecosystems, though covering a small portion of Earth's surface, host exceptional biodiversity. These environments face significant threats from human activities (agriculture, urbanization), extreme weather events, and climate change. However, they also serve as valuable indicators for monitoring pollution impacts and ecosystem recovery following restoration efforts.
