Students will develop sophisticated understanding of terrorist history, spanning Cold War-era state-backed terrorism and European urban militants to the rise of extremist groups like Al-Qaeda and ISIS. The curriculum investigates the tension between safeguarding democratic freedoms and implementing counter-terror measures, evaluating counter-terror laws in nations including the UK and US. Participants will examine root causes of radicalization and political violence, with particular focus on Middle Eastern geopolitics to understand intricate scenarios in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, as well as Pakistan, Syria, and Iraq.
