Pursuing an MA or MSc by Research offers a valuable chance to enhance your analytical abilities and deepen your scholarly focus in a specific discipline. This Research Masters program spans 12 months (or 24 months part-time), focusing entirely on designing, executing, and documenting an independent research project. Unlike taught Masters courses, you'll work under the guidance of two faculty supervisors and will have opportunities to publish your findings upon completion.
Our research team investigates ecological systems across multiple scales - from genetic and organismal levels to population dynamics, community interactions, and entire food webs, including functional processes like decomposition and ecosystem metabolism. While specializing in freshwater invertebrate ecology, we also possess significant expertise in algal communities, microbial life (fungi, bacteria), and fish populations. Freshwater ecosystems, despite covering a small portion of Earth's surface, host exceptional biodiversity. Our focus on these systems stems from their heightened vulnerability to environmental pressures including land use changes (agriculture, urbanization), extreme weather events, and climate shifts. These organisms also serve as sensitive indicators for monitoring pollution impacts and evaluating ecosystem recovery following restoration efforts.
