An MSc (by Research) is the perfect qualification to take your first steps into research. You'll gain qualitative andor quantitative research skills. These will be essential when you complete independent research projects. If you are aiming to study for a PhD, the MSc (by Research) will prepare you for study at PhD level. You will also gain subject-specific research skills for professional development purposes.
You'll demonstrate an understanding of research methods suitable to your chosen field. You'll undertake an approved programme of supervised research and it gets assessed via a thesis and a viva voce (oral examination). Our Mathematics research covers a wide range of pure, applied and education focused maths. Current research interests are in combinatorial aspects of algebra, in functional analysis and its interactions with algebra and group representations, and in model theory. In applied mathematics, members are interested in mathematical acoustics, including analytical techniques in aeroacoustics, underwater acoustics, and loudspeaker design. We have members researching pedagogy and mathematics education, in particular fostering engagement and mathematical resilience, from primary school to HE and adult learners returning to education.
A recognised UK first degree, second class honours or above or equivalent qualification.
Where English is not your first language, evidence is required of your English language qualification at IELTS 6.5/7.0, with a minimum of 6.0 in each sub-score or an equivalent, acceptable qualification (IELTS 7.0 is required in medicine, dentistry and nursing). The IELTS certificate must be dated to within 2 years of your intended programme start date.
