Kent has consistently led the way in advancing practice-based research initiatives. As a PhD candidate, you'll enjoy all the advantages of our program while utilizing our outstanding facilities - featuring two theaters, three studio spaces, a workshop, and a technical studio - backed by our highly skilled technical team.
Practice as Research (PaR) can be pursued across multiple disciplines and formats. You'll receive comprehensive guidance from a dedicated team of expert supervisors throughout your journey.
Kent's Drama department pioneered Practice as Research and maintains its leadership in this field. A PaR PhD allows you to investigate your research questions through creative practice and performance, complemented by a written thesis of up to 40,000 words assessed via viva voce. This program offers exceptional opportunities to refine your performance practice at an advanced academic level, supported by professional-grade facilities and research assets. We encourage proposals exploring any subject matter or artistic form.
Throughout your studies at Kent, you'll be assigned at least two supervisors to mentor your academic and professional growth. Regular meetings will ensure your research progresses effectively, with supervisors identifying areas needing additional training or support. Periodic reviews will monitor your progress, guaranteeing you have all necessary resources to successfully complete your doctoral work.
