To qualify as a professional Architect in the UK, graduates must undergo supervised practical training, including a 12-month placement (often called the Year Out) typically completed before starting full-time Master's studies. This practical training forms Year 1 of the University of Huddersfield's MArch program.
Students without prior satisfactory practical training should enroll in Year 1, though they may apply for Year 2 after a portfolio review. Those who have already fulfilled the practical training requirement should apply directly for Year 2.
The program's second and third years focus on design, encouraging students to investigate architecture's evolving relationship with environmental shifts, technological progress, and its own intricate nature. Students must also cultivate a critical understanding of the physical and cultural contexts influencing design work. This approach helps students define their theoretical stance while developing keen awareness of the geographical, cultural, social, and technical factors shaping architectural practice.
