An EntD is a type of PhD, the highest academic award for which a student can be registered. Like a PhD, individuals who work towards a EntD pursue a research project built around a substantial piece of work, which has to show evidence of original contribution to knowledge. However, the EntD is designed for students whose emphasis is on the need for research to underpin a new business, social enterprise, or innovative service idea. A full time EntD is a three year programme of research and the expectation is that the research will be carried out for 56 of the period of study with the remaining 16 of study time used to develop and action a business plan based upon the research already undertaken. The production of a large-scale piece of written work in the form of a research thesis that should not normally exceed 50,000 words, and the business plan, will be submitted for examination. Completing an EntD can give you a great sense of personal achievement and help you develop a high level of transferable skills which will be useful in your subsequent career, as well as contributing to the development of knowledge in your chosen field.

Qualification Requirements

Master's degree from a UK University or equivalent, normally with a classification of merit or distinction, in a discipline appropriate to the proposed programme to be followed, or an upper second class honours degree from a UK university in a discipline appropriate to that of the proposed programme to be followed, or appropriate research or professional experience at postgraduate level, which has resulted in published work, written reports or other appropriate evidence of accomplishment, or appropriate knowledge and experience of business planning and business start-up, and/or experience of starting up a new service requiring substantial project and financial planning.; Since 31 March 2009 most international students coming to study in the UK have been required to apply for a visa under the new Points Based System, Tier 4. However, this visa type explicitly excludes self-employment and trading in the UK. We are therefore unable to accept applications for Masters of Enterprise or Enterprise Doctorate study from international students where their research is likely to include an element of UK based trading.
