A research degree from the University of Hertfordshire carries global recognition for demonstrating exceptional research capabilities. This program cultivates deep subject knowledge and self-directed research abilities, developed over a duration that varies by degree level. Students pursue an innovative, independent research project in English Language & Communication, guided by a team of at least two faculty advisors. Additional support comes through the University's Generic Training program, EL&C Research Seminars, and other postgraduate activities. Throughout the program, students are motivated to share their findings at conferences and through academic publications.
Assessment focuses on an original investigation into any English Language & Communication topic where specialist supervision is available. Typically, students examine existing language datasets or gather new linguistic evidence. The research culminates in an extensive thesis (usually 80,000 words) that undergoes oral examination by an external evaluator.
