This PGCE with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) equips you with the essential skills and knowledge to teach computing at the secondary level and motivate young learners. Blending academic instruction with hands-on classroom experience under the guidance of our expert educators, this Initial Teacher Training (ITT) program prepares you for the realities of teaching.

Our master's-level ITT course provides diverse secondary school placements, exposing you to various socio-economic environments and students with differing needs. You'll receive personalized support from subject-specialist mentors while our university tutors help you develop evidence-based teaching strategies. The tailored Subject Specialist Studies (SSS) curriculum strengthens your understanding of the Computing national curriculum and enhances your classroom practice during placements.

With a current national demand for computing teachers (1), our PGCE M (Secondary 11-18) Computing with QTS aligns with the Department for Education's Teachers' Standards and Core Content Framework, opening doors to a fulfilling teaching career. The program guarantees at least 120 days of school-based training to develop your practical skills. Upon successful completion, you'll be eligible for QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) recommendation.

Qualification Requirements

You must have at least a lower second class (2:2) honours degree (or equivalent). If this is not in a subject aligned to computing then you may be required to complete a Subject Knowledge Enhancement Programme (SKE) to ensure you meet the minimum subject expertise to begin your Initial Teacher Training. A further skills audit will identify subject specialist skills and will inform your action plan for your training programme. You must also have GCSEs at grade C or above or grade 4 to 9 (or equivalent) including English and Mathematics. Please contact us for a list of acceptable GCSE equivalents. If English isn’t your first language, you’ll also need IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any band (or equivalent). We also accept a range of other English language qualifications, TOEFL iBT Including Special Home Edition Overall score of 80 with the following component scores: Reading – 18, Writing – 17, Listening – 17, Speaking - 20.
