This Master's program in Geoinformation Technology & Cartography specializes in mastering location-based data for Geographic Information Systems (GIS), along with visualization and map creation within a GIS framework. As the sole UK program with a strong cartographic focus, it stands apart from other GIS offerings by emphasizing core geomatics principles and cartographic outputs. Whether you're pursuing a career in geographic information management or cartography without prior academic exposure, or if you have technical experience seeking formal credentials, this course is tailored for you.
Unique in the UK for its cartographic concentration, the program delivers contemporary mapping and data visualization techniques, shaped through collaboration with industry experts via our Geospatial Industry Advisory Board. It holds accreditation from both the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (CICES) upon MSc completion. This one-year MSc in Geoinformation Technology and Cartography prepares students for careers in GIS management or cartography, focusing on foundational spatial data for GIS applications, visualization, and digital mapping. Students gain hands-on experience in our advanced computer labs equipped with industry-standard tools like ArcGIS, MapInfo, graphic design suites, and remote sensing software. The curriculum features either participation in a 3-day GIS research conference (subject to scheduling) or an intensive field course, with expenses covered by program fees. Recognized with an Athena Swan Silver Award, the School of Geographical & Earth Sciences shows dedication to advancing women in STEM fields and enhancing workplace inclusivity.
Graduates find diverse opportunities across private and public sectors, where GIS expertise is increasingly sought-after. Potential roles span cartographic positions with publishers, government bodies, or service firms; GIS specialists in corporations (finance, insurance, retail), environmental agencies, municipalities, or utilities; and geospatial experts with software developers or data providers. Alumni have secured positions at organizations including Scottish Water, Natural Power, Arcus, Harper-Collins Cartographic, BT, and the British Antarctic Survey, working as GIS Cartographers, Operators, and Analysts.
