This Masters program delves into the diverse methods of examining human conflict through an archaeological lens, combining interdisciplinary approaches from battlefield archaeology to war anthropology and confinement studies. Covering eras from prehistory to modernity, the course not only offers academic instruction but also emphasizes hands-on learning through visits to historically significant battlefields and related sites.
Field excursions form a core component of the MSc, with a particular emphasis on conflict landscapes. Students will explore renowned locations such as Bannockburn and Culloden. Hosted by the Centre for Battlefield Archaeology—a globally recognized hub for conflict heritage research—the program addresses how battlefields, prisoner-of-war camps, fortifications, and war graves contribute to cultural heritage. It offers essential training for those pursuing careers in conflict site preservation. Participants will gain access to extensive research materials, artifacts, historical records, and collaborations with museums, archaeological teams, and scientific organizations.
