Geology examines Earth's structure, composition, history, natural hazards, climate patterns, and natural resources. This field offers a holistic view of planetary processes across four dimensions, connecting Earth's crust, surface, and deep interior environments. Our geology alumni have pursued careers in engineering, mineral exploration, renewable energy, and environmental consulting. Our flexible curriculum allows you to select your specialization after completing foundational coursework that prepares you for degrees in both Geology and Environmental Geoscience.
Field studies form a core component of our geology program, delivering immersive educational experiences. You can focus on your preferred specialization, with diverse elective options such as Planetary Science, Engineering Geology, and Climate History. The School partners with the Hunterian Museum, granting access to exceptional specimen collections. Our four dedicated laboratories, open around the clock, feature cutting-edge equipment and software.
The program cultivates spatial reasoning, analytical thinking, and computational abilities. You'll engage in local field excursions throughout your studies, plus an extended field trip in your second year to enhance practical and problem-solving skills. The curriculum includes numerous local field trips and residential field courses, culminating in a final-year research project where you'll formulate and investigate your own geological question. You can customize your degree through various electives in geological and environmental subjects. Our graduates work with leading organizations across multiple sectors, including Atkins, BAM Nuttall Ltd, Chevron, Equinor, Laing ORourke, and Nordgold.
